BEYOND THE TAPE: CANYON EXPANDS EXCEED FAMILY INTO A COMPREHENSIVE RACING LINEUP THAT COVERS ALL DISTANCES
Two new Exceed models bring fresh options to the start line: the marathon-focused Exceed CFR, and the drop-bar-meets-MTB Exceed CFR Gravel, built for the unique demands of ultra-distance off-road competition.
Embargoed until Thursday 9 July 2026: For years, the Canyon Exceed stood as the definitive benchmark for cross-country minimalism—a purebred, featherweight hardtail engineered for the explosive speed of XC World Cup racing. But as the boundaries of cross-country have expanded out from between the tape into the continent-spanning wilderness, the Exceed platform has evolved with them. Today, Canyon announces the expansion of the Exceed from its traditional XC roots into a comprehensive, mixed-terrain racing lineup designed to keep riders moving further and faster on the most ambitious off-road events on earth.
In recent years, endurance racing has undergone a seismic shift. More and more riders worldwide are choosing self-supported ultra-cycling events such as the Atlas Mountain Race, the Tour Divide, and the Silk Road Mountain Race.
And at the start line, the trend is clear: builds are evolving. Riders are increasingly moving beyond conventional, off-the-shelf gravel and hardtail setups—and instead custom-fitting drop bars to mountain bike frames. The goal is specific: MTB-level grip, toughness, and gearing—paired with the ergonomics of a drop-bar cockpit.
Rather than asking riders to piece together compromises from spare parts, the new Exceed CFR Gravel brings that formula together straight from the factory by offering the Exceed’s capability in a drop-bar build.
When you are completely self-supported, a mechanical failure isn't just an inconvenience—it's a race-ender. Canyon engineered the Exceed CFR Gravel with a strict focus on ease of maintenance in remote environments.
By using a wireless SRAM Rival AXS drivetrain, the bike completely eliminates internal mechanical shift cables, which are susceptible to fraying, stretching, or getting pinched under heavily strapped frame bags. Paired with robust, easily serviceable Canyon GR 30 wheels and standard component interfaces, the Exceed CFR Gravel is as simple to keep running on the side of a remote dirt track as it is in a professional workshop.
And there’s speed and comfort to match, too. A 60 mm Fox 32 SC Performance fork delivers small-bump sensitivity for high levels of front-end grip and comfort, even on the most punishing tracks. The CFR Gravel also inherits Canyon’s ultra-fast, ergonomic CP0039 Double Drop bar featuring the Gear Groove - an integrated interface for ultra-athletes to securely mount a computer, lighting rig, or aero extensions without cluttering the cockpit.
The build is fully kitted out with a vibration-filtering Canyon VCLS 2.0 carbon seatpost and an Ergon SPS20 TiNox saddle, which work in tandem to neutralise harsh trail chatter and minimise the deep fatigue that builds over days in the saddle.
“We see riders continuing to race bikes like the Exceed at XC marathon races, but also increasingly on off-road stage races such as the Atlas Mountain Race, Tour Divide, and Silk Road Mountain Race. Furthermore, we’ve seen how they’re running drop bars on mountain bikes for the benefits of tyre clearance, suspension, frame strength, and gear range,” says Canyon's Bastian Langlitz product manager. “We see the benefits of this approach, and we’re keen to support riders looking for a setup like this—we made them the right tool for the job.”
Alongside the gravel edition, Canyon introduces the updated Exceed CFR standard mountain bike build to further bolster the lineup—providing a more traditional flat-bar carbon XC option built for marathon and off-road stage racers who demand the ultimate in lightness and pure climbing efficiency.
The Exceed CFR shares the exact same premium carbon frame as its gravel sibling but is fitted with an elite, pro-level component spec tuned for out-and-out speed. Up front, a high-end RockShox SID SL Ultimate 100 mm fork boosts front-end control, backed up by the top-tier wireless shifting performance of a SRAM XX SL AXS drivetrain. Featherweight DT Swiss XRC1200 carbon wheels complete the package for lightning-quick acceleration.
The two new Exceed models launch on 9 July 2026. Both bikes are available online direct exclusively from Canyon at www.canyon.com or through the Canyon App.
