V2X-EQUIPPED CANYON BIKE HERALDS NEW DAWN OF CAR-BIKE COMMUNICATION

Embargoed until 16:00 CEST, Monday 22 June 2026: Bicycle manufacturer Canyon has unveiled a groundbreaking e-bike concept featuring integrated Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) communication technology. Trialled with support from Volkswagen, the Canyon Roadlite:ON V2X marks the first time the automotive industry's latest connectivity standards have been fully integrated into a production-ready urban e-bike.

The technology aims to address a growing safety disparity on modern roads. Over the past decade cars have become inherently safer and motorist deaths have fallen. As it stands though, the bike industry has not kept pace with the auto industry, and the number of cyclists killed or seriously injured on our city streets is rising.

The advance of Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) technology is already making cars safer by enabling real-time, wireless communication between vehicles, infrastructure, and pedestrians. Now, V2X is closer than ever to reaching the bicycle market. With a V2X-equipped Roadlite:ON concept bike appearing at Eurobike, the annual bicycle industry showcase, Canyon is demonstrating its contribution to cooperative mobility for the safety of all road users and the elimination of cyclist fatalities and serious injuries in traffic.

Canyon’s Roadlite:ON V2X bike is the first to fully implement the latest automotive connectivity standard in a high-performance, production-ready, urban e-bike package.

The concept allows for bikes and equipped cars (or other compatible infrastructure), to detect each other without direct visual contact. A fast-approaching car from the right, obscured by a wall?

• Driver Alerts: With a V2X nano board (powered by nfiniity) nestled in the bike’s downtube and the V2X / GPS antenna in the head tube, the Roadlite:ON can send signals so in-vehicle screen displays alert drivers to the presence of V2X bikes.

• Rider Alerts: When a car approaches, the e-bike alerts the rider via a haptic vibration on the left and/or right side of the handlebar grip. This allows the cyclist to keep their eyes on the road. Visual information can also be displayed on a connected smart device, such as a phone, watch, or bike computer.

• Smart Infrastructure: The bike can communicate with compatible city infrastructure currently being trialled in Germany and the Netherlands, enabling features like bicycle-specific "green waves" at traffic lights.

The system is built around the Roadlite:ON’s carbon chassis with a compact singlespeed, belt-driven, Bosch hub motor and powered by a long-lasting Bosch e-bike battery, providing reserve V2X power even if the battery capacity for the motor is empty.

Another significant safety benefit comes from the bike’s dynamic braking light and radar system, designed to alert drivers to a rider's intended actions and warn them if they are too close.

The rollout of V2X is already happening. There are new cars with this technology on European streets today — in Germany, Car2X is standard on the Volkswagen ID.7 and an option on the Golf and all-new electric ID. Polo, for example — and pilot projects are underway involving buses and city infrastructure. Moreover, the Coalition for Cycling Safety is bringing together leading road safety experts across diverse sectors to accelerate the widespread deployment of V2X technology. The real question is when V2X use cases specifically focused on cyclist protection will be deployed. Without more bikes equipped with V2X, there is less incentive for car OEMs to prioritize that use case. Canyon is helping to create that catalyst.

For V2X to truly have a large-scale positive impact, the technology needs greater adoption within the cycling industry. By showcasing this technology, we can inspire other cycling brands to embrace V2X. The more bicycle and automobile manufacturers who adopt this technology, the safer our streets can become.

1. Statistics behind the claim that the number of riders killed or seriously injured each year is rising.

• Over the past decade, the number of cyclists killed in road accidents in Germany has increased by 20%, whereas the number of car occupants killed has fallen by 35% (source: Statistisches Bundesamt).

• According to the German Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), one in six (16.4%) people killed in German road traffic in 2025 was a cyclist. Compared to 2015, the increase is 20.6%.

• The European Traffic Safety Council reported that 1,926 cyclists were killed on EU roads in 2024. Cyclists now account for 10% of all road deaths in the EU. Police-reported serious injuries among cyclists increased by 12% between 2014-2024 and 65% of cyclist deaths in the EU result from collisions with motor vehicles.

There are an estimated 2-3 million V2X-equipped cars in Europe. Several major automakers and OEMs are integrating Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) technology into their vehicles, enabling real-time communication between cars, infrastructure, pedestrians, and the cloud to improve safety, efficiency, and mobility.
