Industry-leading cycling company Canyon is helping to tackle supply chain emissions by offering a free education and training programme to its suppliers as part of a cycling industry effort.
Embargo: 3pm (CET) Tuesday October 29 2024: Canyon first measured its corporate carbon footprint in 2021. It quickly became clear that there was an urgent need to collaborate within the cycling industry to drive co-ordinated climate action at a global level.
The environmental impact of cycling companies is largely driven by activities within their supply chains, which span across the globe. A significant portion of this impact comes from Scope 3 emissions—those generated during the extraction, sourcing, and production of materials and components used in bicycles. For Canyon, these activities account for the overwhelming majority of its carbon footprint.
In order to discuss how best to tackle these emissions, Canyon attended the first Shift Cycling Culture Bar Camp in January 2023 in Amsterdam. There, Canyon’s Global Director ESG, Yvonne Swoboda, shared a call to action to jointly develop a Climate Action Training programme.
The aim of the training programme is to raise awareness along the value chain about the journey towards a net-zero cycling world. It provides knowledge on how to measure and report GHG emissions, how to set reduction targets and monitor progress, and also includes relevant case studies of potential solutions for driving down emissions.
The programme was co-developed over the course of 2023 and 2024 by bike industry companies from the USA, Netherlands, Germany and Switzerland, with the support of the GIZ (Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit, or the German Development Cooperation), the Initiative for Global Solidarity, Shift Cycling Culture, Leadership & Sustainability and Fischer, Knoblauch & Co.
This collaboration underlines Canyon’s commitment to tackling the climate crisis, and is a good example of the holistic, collaborative approach. Canyon believes that working together and sharing knowledge and experiences will drive change for the better, faster.
At Canyon, we believe it’s essential for the entire cycling industry to work together to address climate change. The Climate Action Trainings are a crucial step in this direction, as they equip our suppliers with the knowledge and tools needed to reduce carbon emissions. To truly make a difference, we must embrace our global responsibility. We can be competitors, but by joining forces, we can harness our enthusiasm and passion to drive positive change and make a greater impact together.Nicolas De Ros Wallace — CEO, Canyon
The Climate Action Training programme is targeted at supplier companies, and is delivered free of charge, in English, Mandarin, and Vietnamese.
Courses will start running online at the end of 2024, covering which emissions exist, how are they measured and how they can be reduced, plus how to set targets, become more energy efficient, and make greater use of renewable energy.
The Climate Action Training programme is an important step in driving climate efforts within the cycling industry. As a sector that relies on a healthy environment, it’s essential to involve our suppliers in this journey. By offering the programme free of charge and in local languages, we’re enabling suppliers to make a meaningful impact alongside Canyon.Yvonne Swoboda, Global Director ESG, Canyon
The Climate Action Training programme will be available to all companies in the cycling sector to engage and collaborate with their suppliers, catalysing climate action throughout the industry.
