CANYON'S SPEEDMAX CFR WITH NEW PRO-ONLY COCKPIT DESIGN POWERS LAURA PHILLIP TO IRONMAN WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP VICTORY

As Laura Phillip crossed the Ironman World Championship finish line in Nice on Sunday 22nd September, swimming, riding and running her way through 8 hours 45 minutes and 15 seconds of racing, she did so with a secret weapon on her Canyon SPEEDMAX CFR.

With the bike leg consisting of a 112-mile ride, which took Laura a little over 5 hours 2 minutes to complete, every advantage of comfort and aerodynamics would count in her tussle with fellow Canyon rider Kat Matthews as both athletes made their bid for the gold medal.

The hilly course through the villages of the Parc Naturel des Préalpes d’Azur featured an elevation gain of 2,400 metres with several steep 10-15% ramps, requiring riders to not only excel on the climbs but also to handle their speed on the steep descents. And as the top two athletes on the podium showed, the Speedmax CFR was more than up to the task.

The design of the Speedmax CFR bike is an aerodynamic masterpiece. Every millimetre of the Speedmax CFR frame has already been meticulously simulated and sculpted using supercomputer and wind tunnel technology to deliver aerodynamics worthy of Triathlon World Champion. And now, every millimetre of Laura’s Speedmax CFR cockpit features similar attention to pain-staking detail.

Laura’s Speedmax CFR cockpit was configured to get her into the fastest and most comfortable position possible, with a new full-carbon monocoque design that optimised Laura’s head, helmet and shoulder interaction, whilst still giving her the steering control to navigate the tricky, technical course.

With the weight difference coming from the monocoque design together with the CdA aerodynamic drag values from Laura’s optimised positioning, Canyon’s engineers calculated significant time-saving advantages for Laura, helping her to make up her four-minute deficit on the leaders after T1 and saving her vital energy for the final running leg.

“Canyon’s new Speedmax CFR cockpit is another example of Canyon’s investment into the highest standards of performance, working with elite athletes to push the boundaries of cutting-edge bike design. It is indicative of everything we are working towards in triathlon, focusing on highest standards of design and quality to take material performance and athlete achievement to the next level,” said Canyon lead R&D engineer Lukas Schuchnigg.

This new CFR cockpit design is still officially in development so full specification details aren’t available. It is also currently only available for selected professional athletes. Slightly revised versions will be used by Canyon athletes Patrick Lange and Sam Laidlow at the Men’s Ironman World Championships, coming up in Kona on Saturday 26th October.

The current Speedmax CFR design with its modular carbon cockpit and out-of-the-box width and height adjustability is available exclusively at Canyon.com or via the Canyon App.
