FOR THE BIKE PARK AND BEYOND – CANYON LAUNCH THE NEW TORQUE RANGE

KOBLENZ, 2 DECEMBER 2021 | EMBARGO UNTIL 6 DECEMBER 2021, 11 AM (CET) — How do you improve a bike that can already hit huge jump lines, race at the Enduro World Series and max out the stoke of park rats everywhere? That’s what Canyon’s designers and engineers asked themselves when they reimagined the Torque. The result is a one-bike answer to a full season of shredding at the Whistlers, Queenstowns and Morzines of the world. The new Torque can roll steep tech at speed, throw shapes off kickers and boost trail-side lips. It’s a long travel machine that is stable at pace, playful at the park and still makes quick(ish) work of big climbs when there’s no chair lift in sight.

Canyon left no stone unturned when updating the Torque geometry. The new models feature slacker headtube angles, reduced offset forks, longer reach and steeper seat tube angles. The frame is stiffer, more durable and, before you ask, yes it can even fit a bottle cage! The changes all come together to make a bike that is faster, more manoeuvrable, has better traction and is ready for the long, steady climbs that lead to the top of the burliest trails.

What really sets the Torque apart is that even after Canyon’s pro riders and engineers put it through the wringer to come up with the ultimate one-size-fits-all long travel bike, they decided that that one size doesn’t really exist. That the rider knows best and so the Torque will now be available with 27.5”, mullet (29” front and 27.5” rear) and 29” wheels! Wheel size has a massive impact on how a bike feels and responds while riding and each setup has its benefits. Whether a rider is looking for the improved rollover and high-speed stability of the 29er, the agility and corner-ripping playfulness of 27.5” or the all-out fun factor of the mullet setup, the new Torque family has them covered.

The improvements to the range’s versatility don’t stop at the wheels. When developing the Torque family, Canyon wanted to maintain ride quality across the line-up to guarantee riders would be stoked about their bike no matter what frame material they picked. To do that, the AL and CF versions of the bike each got their own dedicated development process. The AL bikes use alloy-specific manufacturing and design innovations like bespoke tubing with more rounded profiles as well as tube sections that are straighter and enhance the frame’s strength. At just over 3250 grams, the new frame shaves around 250 grams off the previous Torque AL while improving stiffness, handling, and performance across the board. In the end, the Torque AL and CF have never looked so different yet been so close in ride quality.

The Torque CF outperforms its predecessor too. Weighing in at 2,652 grams, the bike’s full carbon-fibre frame is surprisingly light for a park bike with at least 170 mm of travel. What’s even more impressive is that Canyon created such a lightweight frame while still improving the stiffness-to-weight ratio. The new chassis has the same Category 5 rating as the Downhill World Cup-winning Sender and aptly handles the rigors of freeriding and regular laps at the bike park.

The two mullet bikes in the line-up are for riders who prefer things steep and steezy. The big front wheel holds speed and rolls over just about anything in its path while the smaller rear hoop lets riders swing off the back on steeper trails without worrying about buzzing the tyre. Combining the front triangle of the Torque 29 and the rear triangle of the Torque 27.5, the mullet bikes are no afterthought. The “business in the front, party in the back” setups also get a little extra help with on-trail traction thanks to coil shocks equipped as standard. Top-of-the-line shocks from Fox and Öhlins grace the CF 8 and CF Fabio Wibmer models respectively.

The Torque range kicks things off with the €2,699* Torque 5 and its game-changing aluminium frame. It comes kitted with RockShox suspension, Shimano Deore shifting and grippy Maxxis tyres for a no-nonsense introduction to a serious park bike. On the other end of the spectrum, the €5,799* Torque CF 9 comes fully decked out with supple Fox Factory suspension, light and accurate Shimano XTR shifting and DH-proven, bombproof DT Swiss wheels.
